Give me a hallelujah! Didn’t think we were going to make it out of this winter alive, but we did it! And now it’s finally warm enough to start hosting outdoor parties again. Time to set up that patio set, pull out the BBQ and invite all your friends over for a much needed “Thank-goodness-it’s-summer jam.” Apart from the food and drinks, the best parties have fabulous decor. And what better way to ring in the new season than to have decor that compliments it. Think colours, florals, vintage pieces and anything that screams summer to you. So before you send out the invites, here are some of our favourite decor options for summer entertaining:
Painted Tin Vases
Want a nice but inexpensive table centrepiece? Here’s a fun DIY project for you to try. Following our summer theme, paint your tin cans a pale pastel colour like pink, purple or turquoise. Leave it as it is, or give it a touch of vintage elegance by wrapping the rim with some white lace. If you want to add some glam, add some rhinestones that you can purchase from your local craft store. It’s really up to you how simple or lavish you want these tin vases to be. Once you’re done, fill it up with flowers of your choice and place them on your dining or patio table. But these tins vases can be used as more than just a centrepiece. If you’re having a family-style dinner in your home or backyard, these adorable tin cans make a cute cutlery holder.
It wouldn’t be spring without flowers - no way, no how! They make great centrepieces or colourful accents to your entertainment space, so we say go crazy! Popular warm weather flower options include hydrangeas, tulips, peonies, and roses.
Bright and Bold Pillows
This is a must-have if you have conversation patio set in your backyard. Your guests will have no problem kicking it back and having late night conversations in your backyard with a set of bright and colourful pillows keeping them comfy. Pick a set of plush pillows that go with your party’s colour scheme and use them as a way to create pops of colour in your outdoor living space.
A majority of entertaining decor revolves around the table setting since that’s where guests will spend most of their time. If your summer decor is toned down in terms of colour scheme, opt for nicely patterned placemats that will nicely frame your plates and silverware.
A selection of colourful vases of different sizes will brighten up any summer table. We love the blue and turqouise hues shown here.
Candleholders and candlesticks
If you want a touch of elegance to your outdoor table setting, decorate it with candleholders or candlesticks. Sticking to traditional gold or silver candlesticks are a great way to add regal metallic accents to your dining room table. It will instantly turn a regular dinner to something a little more fancy and intimate.
For some rustic, vintage flair at your summer get together, decorate your space with a birdcage. What we love about it is it’s versatility. It can work as a beautiful centrepiece to your afternoon brunch or a decoration you can hang up. Like the tin cans mentioned above, you can paint the bird cage with a pastel colour of your choice or embrace it's natural state. Even if it’s peeling, it will give it a natural, rustic feel. For added oomph fill the cage up with candles or flowers.
Ideal for any backyard party, paper lanterns are a great way to create a whimsical and airy feel to your summer cookout.
Starry-esque String Lights
For late outdoor dinners or cocktail parties, string lights are a must. It compliments the starry night sky and gives your party a touch of elegance and sophistication. Ideal for summer parties that plan to go later into the night. And heck, we love this so much we suggest you keep them up all summer long.
If you want your party to feel a little more exotic, or simply want a cool way to create some shade in your backyard, set up your own canopy. Choose colourful hues like blues and purples. It's a gorgeous alternative to traditional store-bought canopies and will leave your guests in awe.
Why not go double-duty and let your food be the centre of attention?! Macaron trees are on trend these days, but you can take a more traditional route and set up a cupcake tree. This is absolutely perfect if you’re throwing a tea party with your closest girlfriends or just a fun summer brunch. There’s nothing wrong with putting your desserts up on a pedestal for your guests to admire… until they devour them of course!
