If your family is constantly complaining about having to eat the same old foods, discover a world of new flavours at your local grocers. You can visit a new region almost every day of the week with these five delicious, easy to prepare foods and dinner ideas:
Gourmantra: Gourmantra is a Markham company that produces a line of authentic Indian spice kits. Kits include rice and you add fresh meat, veggies, cream or yogurt. Be warned though: These meals are spicy hot. Choose from creamy, rich tomato based Butter Chicken, lovely and fragrant yogurt based Tandoori, elegant Korma which includes crispy fried onions for garnish and vegetarian Chana Masala. You can find Gourmantra at Metro.
Donairs: Donairs are a Turkish/Greek wrap containing a spiced ground meat served in a warm pita and drizzled with a delicious sweet and garlicky sauce. In Halifax they are extremely popular and anyone who has lived or visited Nova Scotia knows it is the distinct sauce that makes them special. They are quick to prepare and then served in warm pitas with chopped tomato, onion and that yummy, unique sauce. One taste and you will be hooked. Authentic donair kits are only available at Sobey’s and Freshco.
Dim Sum: More like Dim Yum, these little parcels of delight are a form of dumplings filled with various ingredients. You can find dumplings by Richmond Hill’s own K.J. Foods in your grocer’s freezer. Your family will more than likely love the chicken dumplings made more flavourful with their hint of fresh ginger. The dumplings can be boiled or fried. In fact you can even boil them first and then place them in a hot pan with a bit of oil and crisp up the bottoms for pot stickers. Serve them with a spicy Thai dipping sauce or even just dipped in soy sauce. They also make a great appetizer when entertaining. These are available at Freshco.
Parathas: Deep Indian Cuisine makes authentic Parathas, a stuffed Indian flat bread. They come in a number of fillings such as potato or spinach. These are great served with a tamarind dipping sauce and can be served as appetizers or sides. Parathas come pre-cooked and frozen. Heat them in a non-stick pan like a pancake. Plain parathas by Shana Simply Authentic Food are guaranteed to become your favourite flat bread. The frozen dough is cooked in a pan until golden brown and puffy. They are mouth wateringly delicious served fresh and warm and can replace pitas or even tortilla wraps for your family’s favourite sandwiches. Freshco has a good selection of parathas in their freezer.
Thai Red Curry: For an authentic Thai experience try Thai Kitchen red curry paste. It too can be a little spicy but you can control the amount of heat you add. A broth is prepared with the red curry paste, coconut milk and fish or soy sauce and once it has simmered for five minutes you add shrimp or thinly sliced chicken and veggies. Dinner is ready in about 20 minutes. Serve the curry in big bowls with plenty of the rich broth or with jasmine rice. Delish. Thai Kitchen seems to be sold at most major chains.
As you can see a trip around the world is easy with these convenient, easy to prepare international meals. Bon Voyage!
