What you need to know:
This summer berry packs a mean nutritional punch. The blue/purple hued stunner is a super hero when it comes to battling free radicals that can damage your cellular structure as well as your DNA. Blueberries also help boost your memory and delay age related cognitive difficulties.
Available locally from May to October.
What to look for:
Look for organic blueberries (they are higher in antioxidants) that are firm, consistent in color and covered in a waxy white protective coating called the bloom.
How to store it:
Be sure to remove any crushed or bad berries before storing. Do not wash before refrigerating, the excess moisture will cause them to spoil faster. Blueberries typically keep for 3 days in the fridge or for 3-6 months in the freezer.
Why you should try it:
Not only delicious, blueberries are a colourful addition to an array of summer dishes including smoothies, desserts, salads and sauces.
