What you need to know:
Chia seeds are one of the super foods that are packed with plenty of healthy nutrients including contain omega-3, calcium, manganese and phosphorous. Interestingly, they actually come from plants that are a member of the mint family. They are shown to help reduce belly fat and regulate hunger so are excellent if you are trying to lose weight. They also promote brain and bone health so are ideal for children. They aid in the regeneration of cells and tissue which helps fight signs of aging. You can also eat them to help your sleep well. They can be eaten in a number of forms including seeds, powder and a chia gelatine.
Chia seeds are available all year round at health food stores as well as grocery stores with a health food section.
What to look for:
You can find chia seeds whole or in powders. When buying them whole they should be either white or black and uniform in size. Some brands will fill their product with smaller black seeds which are actually from weeds as opposed to the healthy chia plant. Avoid red seeds as these are not mature and do not have the health benefits.
How to store it:
Chia can be stored in an air tight container, preferably a mason jar, in your refrigerator.
Why you should try it:
Aside from the health benefits chia can be used in powder form to thicken stews and sauces. You can also use them in place of bread crumbs and when left to sit in water they form gelatine that has become a popular ingredient in healthy chia puddings. You can also use them to make meatballs and meatloaves a sneaky way to feed them to kids.
