Coconut oil has been getting a lot of positive attention lately, but why are people suddenly putting it in their coffee? Coffee is huge these days and so are the trends that come with it including substituting creamer for butter; perhaps since coconut oil is the healthier fat, why not try it in your coffee instead? Adding coconut oil to your already caffeinated drink is said to give you an extra kick of natural energy that will last you throughout the day, while also giving your brain and metabolism a boost as well!
So, what is coconut oil?
It’s the Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) in Coconut Oil that gives you that extra boost. These MCFA’s are sent directly to your liver, and instead of storing it as fat, they’re converted into energy. They are really easy to digest putting less strain on your digestive system and the MCFA’s in Coconut oil can also help stimulate your body’s metabolism, which can ultimately lead to weight loss. So maybe there’s a little more to putting a spoon full of coconut oil into your morning coffee then just following the next big thing.
Coconut oil is a fat, isn’t it? Although fats have a bad reputation, they’re not all created equal; in fact our bodies need some (good) fat for our overall health. There’s been a lot of confusion over the years regarding some fats, particularly saturated fats. It’s the saturated fats that are artificially manipulated and processed into a saturated state by hydrogenation (also known as Trans Fats) that we should stay away from. Coconut oil is a natural saturated fat that has been used by tropical cultures for centuries as a staple in their diets, a culture that has a nearly non-existent rate of cardiovascular disease.
What are the benefits?
Coconut oil has so many health benefits that it would make your head spin if we talked about all of them! Even though it’s a natural saturated fat, it can actually lower your cholesterol and blood pressure while being a healthy support for your heart, beneficial for your brain, skin, immune system, and thyroid, it’s an anti microbial, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant. The list goes on but we think you get the picture.
So next time you reach for your coffee creamer, think about trying a spoon full of coconut oil instead. Start with your favorite cup of hot coffee and stir in a teaspoon of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, adding more to your taste. You can also try blending it with an emersion blender or a glass stand blender for a frothier version and then see for yourself if this is a trend worth following.
